Support Systems
Abi Egbeyemi
A support system is anyone
or group of people you can turn to for support in your endeavors or when
you have a complete meltdown. The support can be emotional, someone to
lean on when frustration hits or someone to be happy with you when you
accomplish your milestones. Or technical, a professional you turn to
for questions about your venture.
In some cases you can have
one person that is both emotional and technical support, for example,
your sister the tax accountant. Your support system is anyone that can
help you get through the moment.
Examples of support
systems
Sometimes you are not
ready to share your plans with anyone; in this case, you can be your
support system. While your ideas and plans incubate you turn to
yourself for support, write in your journal, or read inspirational
material. When you are ready and confident enough to share your plans,
you turn to your support system.
I use all three support
systems, I know who to call when I need encouragement or when I don’t
want think about work or whatever is going on in my life. I know who to
call when I have software issues. However, I am also a very private
person and I tend to try to solve my problems on my own before
contacting anyone on my list. There is no right way to do this.
Word of caution, I am not
encouraging you to become an energy vampire and dump your issues on
someone else. You also have to keep in mind that whomever you have
chosen to call may also have issues and may not have time. Don’t be
discouraged, that’s life, just go to the next person on your list.
Download a copy of the
Support System List, and create your own support system. Put the list on
your refrigerator or by the phone, so you know exactly were it is when
you need it.
